BigBlueButton

3: BigBlueButton

BigBlueButton lets you create from within Moodle links to real-time on-line classrooms using BigBlueButton, an open source web conferencing system for distance education. You can specify conference times, which are then added to the calendar, and the sessions may be recorded for viewing later. Breakout rooms are also available with the software.

Brightspace

BigBlueButton (BBB) is a web conferencing tool for hosting virtual classroom meetings. Instructors and TAs may use it to conduct live classes, tutorials, office hours, and similar meetings Instructors may also create BBB activities as a virtual space for you to connect with your fellow classmates and coordinate group projects.
If your instructor has created a BBB session for your course, you can access the activity and the videos for any recorded sessions through your D2L Brightspace course page.

Bottom line

While BigBlueButton is integrated with Brightspace and it does exist, it is lacking some of the features and functionality that you are used to seeing when logged into Moodle. Be sure to make a test recording before using BBB live. Check that a colleague can or can’t access the recording afterwards – based on their roles and permissions. For example, ask a colleague if they can see even though they are not enrolled in your module. They should not have access to the content – only you and the students should have access. Then enrol the colleague as a student and perform the same task.

Be wary of using BBB in Brightspace.
